8 Simple and easy exercises for eyes

Hello friends, in this post we see 8 simple and easy exercises for eyes. These exercises help to maintain eye health. Our eyes are the most important organ in our body through which we can see this beautiful and colorful world. But we are not taking any actions to take care of our eyes unless some eye problem arises.  

In today’s world all humans are surrounded with digital screen like laptop, computer or smartphone screens. These screens affect our eyes very badly and it can cause problem like digital eye strain in many peoples.

What is digital eye strain?

Digital eye strain refers to the eye problems caused by prolonged use of digital screens. It is also known as “Computer Vision Syndrome”.  This problem normally found in peoples who spend hours of time on watching digital screens. Let’s see what is digital eye strain and their symptoms.

Symptoms of digital eye strain:

  1. Headaches
  2. Eyestrain
  3. Dry eyes
  4. Blur vision
  5. Neck and shoulder pain
  6. Increased sensitivity to light
  7. Burning or itching eyes

The digital eye strain problem can be cured by doing some exercises for eyes regularly. These exercises relax your eyes and you feel better. 

How these exercises for eyes work for you?

The exercises suggested in this article are so simple and easy that you can do it anywhere and anytime. These exercises take only 20 to 30 minutes of time from your 24 hours. 

These exercises cannot help in some serious vision problems or eye problems caused by aging. But these exercises surely helpful in common eye problems like digital eye strain, eye irritation.

These eye exercises reduce the stress on eye and improve eye health. By doing practicing these exercises on daily basis one can see the amazing improvement in their eye health.

Let’s see the exercises and their procedure.

Exercises for eyes:

1. Blinking:

This is the simplest yet more effective exercise for eyes. This exercise cleans our eye surface and washes it with fresh tears. When we are watching TV or using computer or any other screen, we blink our eyes less. This less blinking of eyes strain our eyes makes them dry. Blinking nourishes our eyes and relief that stress.

Follow below steps to perform blinking exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look straight.
  2. Close your eyes slowly. Keep eyes closed for 1-2 seconds.
  3. Open your eyes slowly.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3, 20 times.

There is another one version of eye blinking exercise you can try. In which you squeeze your eyes. The steps are as follows.

  1. Sit comfortably and look straight.
  2. Close your eyes slowly. Keep eyes closed for 1-2 seconds.
  3. Then keep eyes closed and squeeze eyelids slowly.
  4. Open your eyes slowly.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3, 20 times.

Blinking exercise lubricate your eyes and keep them nourishes.

2. Palming:

Palming is another simple exercise for eyes. This exercise helps in reducing eye strain and stress and make your eyes relaxed. After spending hours on watching screens like computer, TV or smart phone your eyes gets dry start itching. At that time, you should try this palming exercise to relax your eyes.

Follow below steps to perform palming exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look straight.
  2. Rub your palms together so that they get warmed. 
  3. Close your eyes.
  4. Put your palms on your eyelids. Don’t press your eyeballs just gently place your palms on closed eyes. 
  5. Feel the warmth of palm on eyes. Keep this position for 2-3 seconds.

3. Figure 8:

The figure 8 exercise also knows as infinity loop. By doing this exercise you can strengthen your eye muscles. This exercise increases the flexibility of your eyes.


Follow below steps to perform figure 8 exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look forward or on floor.
  2. Pick one point 10 feet away from you. And imagine number 8 there.
  3. Focus on that figure 8.
  4. Now move your eyes in shape of figure 8 in one direction for 2 minutes.
  5. Now again focus on that imaginary figure 8 and move your eyes in shape of 8 with reverse direction.

4. Eye Press:

Like body massage relax your body stress and makes you feel better, pressing eyes relax your eyes. After a stressful work on screens or after reading for hours, you should massage your eyes by pressing.

This exercise regulates the blood circulation in eyes and relax them.

Follow below steps to perform eye press exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably.
  2. Close your eyes.
  3. Slowly press your eyes with fingers. Press every corner of eyes. Don’t rub or don’t press so hard your eyes.
  4. Slowly open your eyes.

5. Change Focus:

As the exercise name suggest that you have to focus on one thing while doing this exercise. This exercise is also known as zooming exercise. To perform this exercise you have to focus on your fingertip or on pencil.

Follow below steps to perform change focus exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look forward.
  2. Hold your one finger in front of face.
  3. Focus on fingertip.
  4. Now slowly move your finger away from face. Keep focus on fingertip while moving finger.
  5. Again, move your finger in reverse direction that is towards your face slowly.
  6. Do this process 10 times.

6. 20-20-20 Rule:

The 20-20-20 rule suggest, while using digital screen after every 20 minutes person should look at object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This exercise is great way to prevent digital strain.

Follow below steps to perform 20-20-20 rule.

  1. Take break after every 20 minutes while using computer, laptop or smart phone.
  2. Look at a object nearly 20 feet away from you.
  3. Keep focusing on that object for 20 seconds.
  4. Repeat this process while using any digital screen.

7. Eye roll:

Rolling our eyes is also a helpful exercise for eyes. Rolling eyes in circularly clock wise and anti-clock wise strengthen eye muscles.

Follow below steps to perform eye roll exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look forward.
  2. Now roll your eyes on left side then up side. Follow this movement move your eyes right then down. And complete end this circle on left side. Repeat this clockwise eye roll movement 10 time.
  3. Do step 2 with reverse direction that is anti-clock wise 10 times.

8. Directional eye movement:

Moving our eyes from left to right and right to left helps to improve eye health. This movements of eyes improve the strength of eye muscles.

Follow below steps to perform directional eye movement exercise.

  1. Sit comfortably and look forward.
  2. Move your eyes to left then right.
  3. Repeat this movement of eyes 10 time.

Other tips for better eyesight:

  1. Eat food rich in vitamins A, C, E and fatty acids. You can eat green vegetables, eggs, citrus fruits to get these vitamins. This food improves eye health.
  2. Quit smoking. You read many times that smoking is injurious to health and it is bad for lungs and heart. But smoking is harmful to other body parts like hair, skin, teeth and eyes too.
  3. To keep your eyes safe from infections and germs, avoid touching your eyes with hands. Wash your hands before touching eyes.
  4. Sun’s ultraviolet rays are harmful to eyes. So, use good sunglasses which protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays while going outside.
  5. Get enough sleep every day. Getting enough sleep makes your eyes refreshed and healthy.
  6. Take frequent breaks while reading or watching TV or computer screens.
  7. Using an anti-glare spectacle is also helpful if you are working computer screens.
  8. Daily practice of above exercises for eyes help you to maintain health of your eyes.
